Gor Mahia Trash Yanga FC 2-1 In The CECAFA Kagame Cup!

Liberian defender turned the ball into his own net in the 4th minute beating goalkeeper Bonface Oluoch after his attempted clearance at the end of a cross from the left wing by Yanga SC winger Donald Ngama skewed goalwards, over the goalkeeper and into the far post to give the homeside the lead.

But parity was restored in the 17th minute courtesy of the high rising Harun Shakava. The defender was invited upfront with a set piece play after Yanga SC right fullback Juma Abdul had hacked an inflight Godfrey Walusimbi deep on the left channel. Karim Nizigiyimana stepped up to grab another assist to his many and still counting as he delivered a well weighted inswinging cross that Shakava sliced beyond Mustapha at the near post.

Yanga SC were reduced to 10 men in the 23rd minute after the exciting Donald Ngama was sent off for a second bookable offense, a stretched arm on the face of Harun Shakav after a battle for the ball on the left byline. The winger had earlier picked his first caution and the first of the match for holding back Walusimbi as the Ugandan attempted to break away in the the 9th minute.

Michael Olunga took time time to settle in the game having been left to mostly play as a lone striker upfront as the absence of midfielder Collins Okoth saw Meddie Kagere occassionaly sinking back into the midfield to support Khalid Aucho and try create opportunities for the youngster.

His first real effort on goal came from distance in the 29th minute but despite putting some good power behind the ball, the execution was off target sailing wide with Mustapha cautiously diving to cover his lines. Barely two minutes later he combined well with Walusimbi but his connection flew inches high over the cross bar. But he was getting his footing in the game and the Yanga SC backline had something to worry about.

On the opposite goal side Bonface Oluoch was called into action, tipping ove a dipping shot from Haruna Niyonzima after the mercurial midfielder won a second ball from a poorly cleared free kick. But it was Olunga who was drawing closer and closer to netting the third goal of this encounter.

in the 37th minute, his appeals for a penalty were waved away by the center referee after defender Kevin Yondani seemd to trip hin inside the area to halt his run on goal. The incident will definately be debated in the coming days but Olunga went on to add more discussion point to this higly rated encounter as his superb 42nd minute strike from the edge of the Yanga SC box beat Mustapha well well only to crash off off the right upright as the tied headed into the break on level.

But Olunga's determination, that which he has brought into every game this season, saw him net a second half quick fire in the 48th minute, turning between two Yanga SC defenders and racing away from a desperately chasing Kevin Yondani to beat the narrowing efforts of Mustapha slotting the ball home to the far right with great compusure.

Gor Mahia were on the ascendancy as Yanga SC seemed to struggle from their numerical advantage in the early stages of the secon half. Olunga missed a glorious chance to burry the homeside in the 50th minute after Kagere found him unmarked in the opposition box but the timely run by Mustapha pushed him off target and the goalkeeper managed to turn his shot out for a corner. Then Khalid Aucho saw his dipping effort from distsnce bounce off the cross bar as he tried to beat Mustapha who was yards off his line.

But the final twenty minutes saw Yanga SC turn the gear as Gor Mahia mostly sat back and tried to catch their pressing opponents on the break. Yanga were handed a lifeline in the 72nd minute after a shot struck Shakava's arm and the center referee awarded a penalty. Skipper Nadir confidently stepped up but his cheeky chip was stopped by Oluoch who recovered to regain height and claim the ball with a one handed save.

Gor Mahia were resillient as the hosts committed more men forward. Nadir saw his effort from inside the box calmly saved by Oluoch as desperation seemed to crop in for Yanga SC. They pressed and were frustrated and on two occassions were nearly punished on their goal end. In the first insatnce Meddie Kagere fired high with Agwanda calling for a set up after Gor Mahia broke away with a counter attack. Then Agwanda opted to feed Kagere instead of taking a late chance and the ball rolled across the face of goal and out.

At the end Gor Mahia earned a statement victory and will now look to build onto it and as they look to better their performances on the international stage and possibly end the 3 decade CECAFA inter-club trophy drought.
